Washington DC's Immortal Regiment & Victory Day.
The 9th of May Is Victory Day also known of as "V day", and is the anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi's in WWII. Victory day is a very big holiday in Russia but not a widely celebrated one in the USA. We went to the WWII memorial in Washington DC, the USA capital, to see what observations of Victory Day would there be and to find out what the Americans thought of Victory Day as well as of Russia for that matter. Many people were present there, but not because it was Victory Day but just there for the memorial in general. Many people there were clearly very patriotic but did not necessarily know that it was Victory Day. Gary Secor, along with his wife, was there to remember people from the “Famous” 299th Combat Engineer Battalion where he served later. Being aware that they fought in the war, still he had no clue it was Victory Day. He said that to him victory day reminded him of the greatest generation the USA has ever had and that it showed "if you mess with USA you will lose"
As the day went on, however, we met some people who were there to take part in the Immortal Regiment live online event; they were the organizers for Washington DC. The Immortal Regiment is a very big part of the Russian tradition of the yearly Victory Day celebrations where people gather and march with photos of their family members who had taken part in WWII.
One of the organizers Olga said "every year we start at the white house and come to the WWII memorial with hundreds of people but now for the second year in a row it is online due to Covid but we hope next year to be back.One of the participants was Daniela Addison, whose grandfather was a pilot and helped to rescue 1769. Although from a Russian-Ukrainian family and, she was born in the USA and now serves as a US Marine, stationed in Washington.
The other organizers were Russian Americans that were born in Russia but live in the USA. They all had photos of their grandparents who fought in WWI against the Nazis. One woman even had a family member that also fought the Japanese in Manchuria.
Due to Covid-19, most Immortal Regiment parades are online and this is why there was not many people but the overall feeling of remembering your family was there for sure. It was very interesting to see the difference of how much more Russian people celebrate Victory day more than Americans do. This is probably due to the fact that up to 27,000,000 Russians were killed in WWII and whereas the US lost about 400,000 people. Of course, this does not belittle the USA's involvement in the war but these figures really show how much the war really affected the Russian people and culture.

Days ago the Generals in the Armenia army demanded the Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, resign then he accused them of a coup attempt. and since the opposition protesters have stayed in a tent camp and had bid meetings while closing and occupying the street outside the national assembly or parliament.. Saturday we filmed a taste of what it is like. these are dangerous times for Armenia. Only time will tell whats next

Today March 9th During an opposition rally in front of the Armenia National Assembly, the protesters ran to the side entrance and clashed with police and set up a new camp to totally close the national Assembly building so no one can go in or out. Riot police and soldiers were deployed.

Donetsk, Ukraine Interview Outside the polling station of the Referendum #2

Today March 11 2014 Pro-Russia people in Eastern Ukraine held a Referendum or Vote to become the "Donetsk People's Republic". I along with a translator went to the polling stations to see what people had to say. In the month leading up to Referendum most of the government buildings in eastern Ukraine where occupied by heavily armed Pro-Russians. Some of the government buildings where taken peacefully and some where taken violently. On May 1st the Ukraine Government began a ATO or Anti-Terrorism Operation to Regan control of the region. Since then Eastern Ukraine has descended into civil war. In Odessa there was a battle in the streets between Pro-Russian people and Pro-Ukrainian people. Three people where shot dead on the street and forty three Pro-Russians where burned alive after going into the occupied Trade Union building. At Least Three Ukrainian Military helicopters have been shot down in the Donbass/Donetsk region. There have been many People , unarmed civilians, Pro-Russian militia, and Ukrainian military, ether shot dead or tortured and killed in Mariupol, Donetsk, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk. and many other city's. People are dieing literally everyday. Somewhere between one and two hundred people have been killed in the last week and a half. I wonder why after the most deadly 10 day period of the Ukrainian crisis the issue is not being covered by western media as heavily as it was before the civil war started.

In the last days, there has been wave after wave of explosions, not just in Kyiv, but all across Ukraine, from Livov (Lviv) in the west to Kharkov (Kharkiv) in the east and Odesa in the south( virtually every major Ukraine city). It even seems Belarus might be preparing to enter the conflict as yesterday they formed a Counter Terrorist Operation (CTO) after reports "of planned provocations by a number of neighboring states." and today "A regime of heightened terrorist threat has been introduced in the Republic of Belarus" — President LukashenkoMuch of this seems Russia's answer to the attack on the Crimean bridge which Russia has declared a terrorist attack by Ukrainian special services. This is a clear major escalation of the war.In this report, I talk to Russians in Rostov-On-Don and see what their reaction is to Russia attacking all Major Ukrainian city's and this newest escalation.

The Kursk region of Russia, a contested area near the frontline of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, has become a critical battlefield for modern drone warfare. Months after Ukraine’s forces made a significant incursion into Russian territory, occupying over 1,500 square kilometers, the tides have shifted, with Russian forces regaining control of the majority of that land. This report delves into the inner workings of Russian drone operations, showcasing their role in shaping the dynamics of this conflict.

Drone Command and Control in Action

During my visit to a Russian special forces command center, I observed the intricate coordination of drones, referred to as “small aviation,” which play a pivotal role in surveillance and tactical operations. These drones operate in a “carousel” system, with overlapping coverage zones to ensure continuous monitoring of enemy positions.

One of the commanders, call sign Veter, explained:“Our goal is to maintain 24/7 surveillance. Whether it’s day or night, we monitor enemy movement in all critical zones. Even in adverse weather conditions like snow or fog, our drones are in the air when necessary.”

Live feeds from drones provided real-time information to attack units. The precision of these operations was evident as commanders disseminated data to ground forces, enabling coordinated strikes.

The Mechanics of Modern Warfare

The drones serve multiple functions, from reconnaissance to offensive operations. For example, an Ukrainian drone, nicknamed "Baba Yaga," was observed by Russian drones delivering supplies such as food, ammunition, and even mines. This dual-purpose technology, initially designed for agriculture, has been adapted for warfare. Russian forces counter these threats by tracking and neutralizing drones when possible.

A commander described the importance of drones in the conflict:“Drones are our ‘eyes’ in the sky. They allow us to detect movements, locate enemy shelters, and guide artillery with precision. This capability changes the nature of warfare, especially in urban and forested areas.”

Targeting and Tactical Strikes

During my time at the center, I witnessed the coordination of a successful strike on enemy positions. Drones identified a target—a structure housing enemy forces—and relayed the information to artillery units. Moments later, a tank delivered a precise shot that hit the target directly.

“It was a sniper’s shot from the tank,” the commander explained. “120 millimeters, right on the target. This level of precision is achieved because of the real-time intelligence from our drones.”

The Human Element

Beyond the technology, the soldiers operating these drones brought a personal perspective to the conflict. Their resolve was clear as they discussed their daily operations and the challenges of their work. One soldier reflected on the psychological toll of the conflict but emphasized the importance of their mission:“This is our job, and we do it with determination. Every day is a test of our skills and resilience.”

My fiancée Olga Astanina and part of our team went to a bomb shelter in the Petrovka District of Donetsk. This area has been under heavy shelling for over 2 years. Some of these People have been living in this bomb shelter since the beginning of the war. Most have lost there homes to shelling and the few who haven't are afraid to go home. They distributed much needed aid to the people there, I was not able to attend because I was in another part of Petrovka were homes were destroyed by shelling the night before.
