On-the-Ground Report from Tbilisi Amid Protests: Patrick Lancaster Investigates Diverse Opinions

In his latest on-the-ground report, independent journalist Patrick Lancaster explores the evolving political situation in Tbilisi, Georgia. With protests persisting near the Georgian parliament for over ten days, Lancaster shifts his focus away from the immediate protest zone to capture perspectives from the broader population. His interviews with local residents shed light on varying viewpoints about the protests, the government, and Georgia’s future.

Location and Context
Lancaster begins his report in central Tbilisi, approximately two kilometers from the protest area near the parliament building. The ongoing demonstrations are reportedly fueled by allegations of election fraud and dissatisfaction with the ruling Georgian Dream party. Lancaster’s aim is to gather a diverse set of opinions from people removed from the protests.

Interviews with Local Residents
Lancaster’s interviews, conducted in both Russian and English, primarily involve older and middle-aged residents. Key themes emerge from their responses:

Skepticism Toward the Protests:

Many interviewees express disapproval of the protests, describing them as unrepresentative of the general population. Several estimate that only a small percentage of Georgians, between 5-10%, support the demonstrations.

Some respondents criticize the protesters’ methods, including accusations of aggression and use of Molotov cocktails. One resident emphasizes that protests should remain peaceful and should not harm police or civilians.

Support for the Government:

Numerous residents interviewed affirm their support for the Georgian Dream party and Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, viewing the government’s actions as legitimate.

Several respondents highlight the importance of peace and stability, dismissing claims of election fraud and arguing that the elections were conducted fairly.

Views on Europe and Russia:

While many residents express a desire for closer ties with Europe, they emphasize maintaining Georgia’s traditions and independence.

Opinions on Russia vary, with some condemning Russian aggression but stressing the importance of peaceful relations with all countries.

Generational Divide:

Lancaster notes a generational divide in opinions, with younger protesters advocating for pro-European reforms and older generations focusing on stability and tradition. Many older respondents express frustration with what they perceive as the protesters' lack of respect for Georgia’s cultural heritage.

Concerns About Foreign Influence:

Some interviewees speculate about foreign involvement in the protests, questioning the motivations of international NGOs and external actors.

Challenges in Gathering Opinions
Lancaster encounters difficulty engaging with younger residents, noting reluctance from many to speak on camera. Despite this, he emphasizes the importance of showcasing all perspectives, including those critical of the protests, to provide an uncensored view of the situation.

Concluding Observations
Lancaster concludes that the opinions he gathered diverge significantly from the narrative presented by the protesters. He encourages viewers to seek information from multiple sources to form their own educated opinions about the unfolding events in Georgia.

Call to Action
The report closes with Lancaster urging viewers to support independent journalism by subscribing to his Substack and engaging with his content. He promises further updates and in-depth reporting from Georgia as the situation develops.

Russian Akhmat Special Forces Drone Combat Underfire: Ukrainw War Kursk Frontline Battle
In the Kursk region of Russia, near the contentious frontline of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, modern warfare is taking center stage.

Months after Ukrainian forces made a significant incursion, occupying over 1,500 square kilometers, Russian forces have pushed them back to under one-third of that territory. My latest report takes you directly to the heart of this high-stakes battle, where drone warfare plays a critical role in shaping the dynamics of the conflict.

Preparing for the Launch

Accompanying the Russian “Akhmat” special forces, I witnessed the assembly and launch of a Supercam drone, a small unmanned aircraft used for reconnaissance and artillery targeting. These drones are a lifeline for gathering real-time intelligence, enabling precise strikes against Ukrainian positions.

In a carefully chosen location hidden within the forest belt, the team prepared the drone for takeoff. Assembling the catapult system, the soldiers explained the process and the risks involved.

“This location can be targeted by Ukrainian forces once the radar detects the drone’s launch,” a soldier said, highlighting the danger of the operation. The team’s strategy involved launching from one location and landing in another to minimize risk.

The Role of the “Supercam” Drone

The Supercam is not just a drone; it’s a pivotal tool in modern warfare. Its role extends beyond reconnaissance, providing real-time intelligence that directs artillery strikes. However, deploying these drones is a high-stakes game.

“If the Ukrainians detect us, they can launch a HIMARS strike within five to seven minutes,” the team leader explained. He noted that this danger necessitates quick movements and constant changes of position to avoid becoming a stationary target.

Despite these risks, the Supercam provides critical information. Its ability to survey enemy movements and transmit data allows Russian forces to maintain control is certain areas.

The Supercam S250 Russian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is one of the best UAVs in the class in terms of tactical and technical characteristics. The aircraft can fly up to 3 hours in adverse weather conditions and perform high-quality video monitoring, which significantly improves the operation quality, whether it is monitoring, mapping, or security of facilities and detection of unauthorized activity. A distinctive feature of Supercam S250 is its wide range of payloads with various combination capabilities.
Under Fire and On the Move

The launch itself was tense but successful. After addressing a technical glitch in the drone’s flight system, the team managed to get the Supercam airborne. As it soared into the sky, it provided a live feed to a control center where pilots maneuvered it over Ukrainian-controlled areas.

Once the drone was operational, the team quickly vacated the launch site to avoid detection and retaliation.

“This is a dangerous situation, but it’s part of the job,” a soldier remarked. The necessity of adaptability and speed was evident as the team demonstrated the complexities of drone operations in active combat zones.

Independent Reporting from the Frontline

This report offers an unfiltered look at a side of the Russia-Ukraine war that is rarely seen. Drone warfare has revolutionized modern combat, turning technology into a decisive force on the battlefield.

As always, I encourage viewers to seek information from multiple sources to form a well-rounded perspective. Independent journalism plays a crucial role in uncovering stories like this, and your support is vital for its continuation.

Reporting Underfire: New Ukraine War Escalation & Trench combat on the frontline
Back from two days on the frontline investigating the lustiest escalation of the the Ukraine war. In the last days Donetsk Peoples Republic has reported that Ukraine forces have shot 80 BM-21 Grad Rockets into the territory of DPR from Adeevka. There has also been an attack on a civilian area of Donetsk, hitting a bus stop and home.
While on the fronline between Donetsk and Adeevka we came underfire from Ukraine positions with a SPG-9 or tripod-mounted rocket grenade, "it was close, very close". Gunfire, rockets and tracers were constant all night. This is the heaviest I have seen war when I have reported from the frontline since Christmas of last year.

Today there has been wave after wave of explosions, not just in Kyiv, but all across Ukraine, from Lviv in the west to Kharkiv in the east and Odesa in the south.
This seems to be Russia's answer to the attack on the Crimean bridge 2 days ago which Russia has declared a terrorist attack by Ukrainian special services. This is a clear escalation of the war.
In this report, I talk to residents of Crimea and see what they think about the attack on the bridge and how they are dealing with Russian control of Crimea and what they think about Ukraine's vows to regain control of Crimea.

In This report I, journalist Patrick Lancaster, embedded with the Espanola brigade in the Russia-Ukraine war zone, Russian snipers offered their candid opinions on the recent U.S. presidential elections, Donald Trump’s victory, and his proposed peace plan for the ongoing Ukraine war. The report provides a rare perspective from soldiers actively engaged in the war, showcasing a mix of humor, pragmatism, and skepticism about Western politics.

"Trump is a Kremlin Agent": Humor?
One sniper, call sign "Yaryi," a deputy commander in the Espanola brigade, shared a tongue-in-cheek yet bold comment:
“Everybody knows Trump is a Kremlin agent! So we also voted for him!” he exclaimed with a laugh, suggesting that the brigade found Trump’s victory favorable. Though said humorously, it underscores a broader narrative of how Trump’s perceived approachability towards Russia is interpreted by those on the ground.

Another sniper, "Sever," emphasized their focus on the conflict itself, dismissing the significance of American politics:
“We have our own president and our own elections. We don’t care whom they vote for and what they do there.”

The Practical View: Politics vs. Combat
When asked about Trump’s promise to end the war, the soldiers remained cautiously optimistic but unconvinced. Sever remarked,
“They will decide this at the top—our president and theirs. We are warriors; we will keep fighting as long as it takes.”

Another soldier echoed this sentiment, adding that while leaders debate resolutions, the realities on the battlefield remain unchanged.

Historical and Geopolitical Reflections
One sniper offered a nuanced analysis of the war, describing it as a “natural historical process” born from competing national interests:
“America was pushing its interests, and we stood for ours. Conflicts like this are inevitable. They always have been, and they always will be.”

This perspective aligns with the broader Russian narrative that the war is a defensive effort to protect their homeland from external threats, such as what they perceive as rising nationalism and militarization in Ukraine.

Trump’s Peace Plan: Business Before Politics?
The soldiers expressed mixed views about Trump’s potential to de-escalate the war. One sniper highlighted Trump’s business mindset as a possible advantage:
“Trump is a businessman, not a politician. He understands the money of his country is in Ukraine. The best way forward is to bring that money back to Americans, not Ukrainians.”

While hopeful, many soldiers remained skeptical about whether Trump could or would deliver on his promises, as geopolitical realities often outweigh campaign rhetoric.

Lancaster’s Reporting: An Alternative Lens
Patrick Lancaster’s report is unique in its access and approach, giving a voice to those rarely heard in Western media. His work highlights the human element of the conflict, presenting not only the soldiers’ combat expertise but also their opinions on global politics, their sense of duty, and the ideological motivations behind their actions.

Lancaster’s concluding message calls for continued support for independent journalism:
“Like, share, and support our work. These stories need to be told, and it’s only possible with your help.”

Georgian Protests: Unveiling Political Complexities and Historical Perspectives

In my latest video report, I delve into the ongoing political unrest in Tbilisi, Georgia, where protests and clashes have gripped the nation for weeks. Reporting from the steps of the Georgian Court of Appeals, I bring you an in-depth perspective on the complex political dynamics through an exclusive interview with Gayla Nikolaishvili, a former political prisoner under the KGB, human rights lawyer, and former parliament member.

The Setting: Georgia in Turmoil

For over a month, Georgia has been at the epicenter of a political standoff following disputed elections. The ruling Georgian Dream Party, which secured over 50% of the vote, faces accusations of electoral fraud from a coalition of opposition parties. This has led to widespread protests, some escalating into violent confrontations. Protesters accuse the government of undermining democracy, while authorities counter that the opposition is inciting unrest to delegitimize the elections.

Gela Nikolaishvili: A Voice from History

In my interview, Nikolaishvili shares a unique perspective shaped by his experiences during the Soviet era and his role in Georgian politics. Once imprisoned for anti-Soviet activities, he spent 18 months in a KGB prison for distributing anti-communist leaflets. His personal history underscores his commitment to human rights and democracy, providing invaluable context to Georgia's current political struggles.

Nikolaishvili explains that the opposition’s primary grievance lies in their failure to secure a majority in the elections. While they received substantial support—40% nationwide and nearly 300,000 votes in Tbilisi—this was not enough to challenge the ruling party’s dominance. The opposition claims widespread fraud, but foreign observers and many citizens have disputed these assertions, finding no evidence of large-scale irregularities.

Western Influence and Domestic Tensions

Nikolaishvili highlights the role of the European Union (EU) in shaping Georgia’s political landscape. He notes that the EU’s criticism of recent Georgian laws, including those increasing transparency for NGO funding and limiting LGBTQ+ propaganda, has strained relations. The Georgian government’s refusal to repeal these laws has led to accusations of authoritarianism and triggered further tensions with Western powers.

Interestingly, Nikolaishvili points out what he perceives as a double standard in Western narratives. While past administrations accused of human rights violations were lauded as democratic, the current government’s resistance to certain Western demands has led to allegations of pro-Russian sentiment. “They think in the West, ‘If they don’t fulfill our demands, then they’re pro-Russian,’” Nikolaishvili observes, illustrating the challenges Georgia faces in balancing sovereignty and international alliances.

Freedom of Speech: A Contentious Debate

Addressing the freedom of speech, Nikolaishvili argues that opposition voices dominate Georgian media, with four opposition-aligned TV channels broadcasting continuously. While government-aligned outlets also exist, Nikolaishvili asserts that the claim of media suppression is exaggerated. However, he acknowledges instances where protesters have obstructed journalists from opposing viewpoints, underscoring the polarized nature of Georgia’s media landscape.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Georgia?

As protests persist, Nikolaishvili warns of heightened tensions in the lead-up to key political milestones, including the president-elect’s inauguration on December 29. The opposition’s refusal to recognize the election results raises the specter of prolonged political instability.
